SUTTON – U.S. Senate candidate Scott Brown today visited Christmas ornament manufacturer Vaillancourt Folk Art as part of his “Jobs are Job One” tour of Massachusetts employers. A family-owned business, Vaillancourt Folk Art has been forced to reduce its payroll from 50 to 20 employees due to the sluggish economy and high taxes.
“Time and again small and medium-sized companies ask me why in the middle of a two-year recession they would be targeted by Washington to pay additional taxes that will hurt their ability to hire new employees,” said Brown. “Small business is the engine of the American economy, but it can’t be if Congress imposes billions in new health care taxes and fees and adopts a cap and trade program that will cause energy costs to skyrocket.”
Brown said that small businesses employ roughly half of the nation’s workforce and create two-thirds of new jobs. Brown has called for an across-the-board tax cut on individuals and businesses to get the economy moving again -- a move proposed by President Kennedy in 1962.
Brown added: “President Kennedy’s approach is just as right today as it was back then. Cutting taxes will have an immediate effect on entrepreneurship, investment, and small businesses.”
