I am an unyielding optimist. I can leave loved ones and the security of familiarity, to chase a dream in a new world. I can conquer the unknown. I can criticize, and make demands of my rulers. I can defeat my oppressors. I can secure my own liberty, under God. I can show the world a thing or two. I can cross mountains, or tunnel through them. I can connect distant oceans, with steel. I can sail against the wind. I can blast canals through rock-faced cliffs and malaria-ridden jungles. I can staunch the flow of mighty rivers. I can build cities in the desert. I can scrape the sky. I can feed the world. I can fly. I can walk, drive, and play golf on the moon. I can never rest. I can dream with my eyes wide open. I can create my own destiny, and accept my own responsibility. I can pray. I can decide. I can tell you who I am, and you will see what I am: American.
