I came to Washington to be an independent voice, to put politics aside, and to do everything in my power to help create jobs for Massachusetts families. This Senate jobs bill is not perfect. I wish the tax cuts were deeper and broader, but I voted for it because it contains measures that will help put people back to work.

I was disappointed with the continuation of politics-as-usual in the drafting of this bill, as it was crafted behind closed doors, without transparency and accountability. I hope for improvements in that process going forward. All of us, Republicans and Democrats, have to work together to get our economy back on track. I hope my vote today is a strong step toward restoring bipartisanship in Washington.

This is not a JOBS bill . . . and if you think so, you are a fool . . . it is a spending bill . . . and Scott only recently commented that he would like to "freeze" spending . . .

It is a cut and dry issue - Unless those in Washington are ready to go down the road of government ownership of ALL - including owning you and me - they should reject a yes vote for ANY spending other than that spending outlined in the Constitution, which is minimal to say the least, but of the most important is defense . . . ALL SPENDING should stop immediately or else this country is in deep trouble.

Having said that, we know that the liberals - who are in control- are going to continue to spend and those serious about saving this country should vote against ANY spending bill no matter what it is called . . . they may not be able to stop spending by the liberals at this time, but they should vote against it to stake a position . . . so WE know who they are . . . so WE know who to vote for or financially support in the future . . .

. . . and NOW we know who Scott Brown is.

That is why his vote is ridiculous and disappointing and a slap in the face to those of us who scraped up money to support him. **** Scott Brown is no different than Obama - He told us one thing to get elected and he does another when he gets into office. ****

Michael . . . read between the lines - those are not REAL tax cuts - they are too minimal in the current scenario . . .

Not entirely true Michael. It does lower taxes, but the amount is very, very small. And because it is 'targeted' the government does still have control on how it is spent. see my notes to Lindsey below..

Lindsey, bipartisan support doesn't mean it is a good bill. Again, WE must stop looking to government and put more power(and money) back in the people's hands. Can you imagine what a few small business owners could do if they had lower taxes with no strings attached? If you were a small business owner(and you might be) wouldn't you know better how to use your money than the government?

So is it your position that the government shouldnt cut taxes as this bill has done that Scott has supported?
Comment by Michael Allen on February 23, 2010 at 11:10pm
I see what your saying American Aggie, but this bill LOWERS TAXES, therefore lessening the government role involving your money. Free markets will respond with more working capital through lower taxes, this argument has been made for years by Republicans, but now they oppose tax cuts apparently since Obama signed it, very concerning that we are far to involved in political games here. This bill puts small business's money back into the hands of the small business to invest in its self....thats not government control.

Sherri
It wasn't crafted behind closed doors. It was drafted by Senator Reid and is built around an approach that has won bipartisan support in the past.

the reason the rest of stimulus money is not being used is that Obama and cronies will use OUR dollars for democrat elections; their 'behind closed doors' political promises, all the lobbyists, drug companies, wall street, etc. and the Chicago political machine that has followed them to Washington. Hope more Americans see this and vote the bad ones out - both democrats and republicans.....

The best thing the feds can do to create jobs is to get out of the way. Cut about 75% of the current fed spending which equals about how much of the current fed govt is unconstitutional. About the only purpose of the fed govt is to provide border security and national defense. One of which they are seriously failing at. Deregulate health care so insurance companies can compete across State lines. Give tax cuts not tax credits. Tax credits have to be paid back.
So if the companies are not kicking in $13 billion (payroll tax) to fund the social security payments of those workers, who is? Or will their benefits be reduced in proportion to that amount when they retire? Let me guess, our kids and grandkids will be making up the shortfall.
You see Scott, the answer is never more government. All government does is take money away from the producers of jobs and waste it on propping up failures, see banks, GM, etc., By the way, if the financial institutions were "too big to fail" why weren't the anti-trust laws enforced prior to that? I digress.
Is there a small role for the government to play to ensure abuses are not happening? Sure, but it should be minute role and not a controlling role like our current democrats=progressives=marxists leadership would like.

btw Michael Allen, I agree that 'pork' is most definitely a huge problem, but my assessment of this bill is right on. We must stop turning to Washington to 'fix' our problems. More government control and power through taxes will not create jobs, only free-markets with free Americans spending money will create jobs. That is a basic principle that is rooted in our Constitution. We must shrink the size and power of government if we want to prosper.

I guess I'd be interested to see what a road construction worker would say to the argument that government doesn't create jobs though, road improvement projects are paid for by government money.
