With the new left wing government comes a Pew research moonbat now in charge of NOAA, her name is Jane Lubchenko. For years the feds have cut back on our commercial fishermen days at sea, to the point where many have already gone out of business. Now the NOAA and Jane are trying to ram through new rules they call "catch shares" that will put the rest of the small family fishing boats out of business. You will read bogus stories of how great this is going to be in papers like the Globe. My brother is barely hanging on as is. The restrictions have been so severe that he usually has to go out to sea by himself, the gov't won't even allow him to catch enough fish to pay a helper. And now with these catch shares, he has calculated that his quota will be @ 20% of what it has been the past few years. In other words, if this goes through in 2010, he has to sell his boat and get a new career.
This hasn't been a political issue so much as it is becoming now. The thing is, they are using weird science to paint a picture of over-fishing but the truth is stocks of cod, scallops, and others have been rebuilt and are healthy. So they keep deleting the inconvenient truths and come out with lies. It's very similar to the climate-gate scam that has made Al Gore a billionaire. The scientists cheat and lie, in order to guarantee future funding and to guarantee thier jobs.
So we now have a huge federal bureaucracy in the form of the NMFS and part of the NOAA dedicated to putting small fishermen out of business. Senators Snowe and Collins of Maine and Senator Gregg of NH have been trying to help the commercial fishermen for years. I'd love to see Scott commit to this cause. Doing so would ally him with a decent sized group of concerned citizens.
If you are interested in finding out more, read the Gloucester Times who cover this issue daily. Here is a great opinion piece that does a much better job of explaining the situation that I have done:
